Tom Munson to Host a Telemetry Workshop Date and location to be announced soon; Tom will work with falconers to show them how to make their own transmitters! Arizona Falconers Association Annual Picnic Reminder The Arizona Falconers Association invites you to attend a Falconer's Picnic on Sunday, September 22nd, at Thumb Butte Park near Prescott. This is the same location as previous AFA picnics. Directions: From Prescott, AZ: take Gurley Street west, which becomes Thumb Butte Road, travel 2.2 miles to the Thumb Butte Picnic Area entrance. The event will begin at 1 PM and end at 4 PM. Please feel free to bring your bird and the rest of your family. There will be grass and shade trees so you can stake out your bird. This will provide a great chance for apprentices to see hawks and falcons up close. No loose dogs please. Jennifer Moore from Arizona Public Service and Lesly Swanson of Salt River Project will speak at 1:30 about what is being done in Arizona to prevent raptor electrocutions. Tom Munson will give a short announcement of an upcoming telemetry workshop that he will host in the Phoenix area where falconers can actually make their own transmitters. AFA President Charlie Kaiser will update everyone on club activities. There will be no formal hunting trips planned in association with this event, but members are free to plan their own. The park has hiking trails and reportedly a peregrine nest site. Bring your binoculars or spotting scope! Hamburgers, hotdogs, and soft drinks will be provided. Please bring a side dish or dessert to be shared with everyone. Bring your own beer, if you want it, but no glass containers are allowed in the park. Special thanks to Jeff Parker and Gary Lollman for setting this event up! There will be a club benefit "Garage Sale". Please bring your unwanted falconry related items; old perches, old hoods, old books or publications; things that still has some useful life in them, but you have moved on. We will tag them with garage sale pricing and the proceeds will help pay for the food. We hope to see a good turnout for this event. It will provide a great opportunity for members to make new friends in the sport, re-establish old friendships and to encourage camaraderie as we start this new hawking season. Feel free to invite any potential apprentices to the picnic. For more information, call Ken Mesch, AFA Secretary, at 406-672-9906. Save the Date! The Desert Hawking Classic will be January 23 through 26, 2014, in Kingman.
