Harry McElroy Memorial Page

Harry McElroy was the first member of the AFA, an influential falconer, and among the earliest practitioners of falconry in the USA. He worked to ensure falconry was a legal sport. Falconry in Arizona would not be the same as it is today without Harry McElroy.

This page will feature memories, photos, and articles featuring Harry, and we would like to invite people to share their own memories/photos.

Here are some articles from the AFA's old newsletter, Unicinctus, about Harry's experience with falconry in the 60's and the development of the sport from then on.

Read it here: Unicinctus.pdf

Here are some episodes from the Falconry Chronicles Podcast featuring Harry McElroy.

Episode 68: Harry McElroy

Episode 73: A Tribute to Harry McElroy

In Remembrance

We lost one of the all-time great falconers on October 3rd, 2024. Harry McElroy passed away at the age of 94. The last time he was seen, outside of his closest family and friends, he was riding his horse and flying his bird across the Arizona desert.

Past AFA president and close friend to Harry, Jamaica Smith will be sharing her thoughts in this space. We also invite all who have known him, or known of him, to share your memories.

The 2025 DHC will be a tribute to Harry and his devotion to the sport of falconry, making it a place where all were welcome and all were encouraged. Let’s continue to carry out this most worthy tradition as a way of honoring the man and his legacy.

Please share any memories or photos in the blog below, or email them to arizonafalconers@gmail.com
